Just a few thoughts on this. I agree with Eric about a diversity of sources. I keep an ever-evolving stash of news bookmarks in my various browsers (on desktop PC, iPad, and iPhone), including some in a browser toolbar, so that jumping around to various news sites is akin to changing channels. When reading news articles, blogs etc., a few things to watch out for: what sources (if any) is the reportage attributed to (or even linked to)? Beware when attribution is completely lacking. Are primary documents linked from the story/blog? I respect reporting more when it links to source documents/data/even videos of the event in question, so I can get the "full story" if I want. There's more, maybe later, but the point is there are many ways to be an informed info-consumer, though it does take work and critical reading/thinking. Thanks for this thread.
I'm always telling people that. No shame in binge watching your fave sitcom for a day or two to moderate your news consumption. I'm not sure humans were meant to know every notable thing that happened everywhere in the country every day, all day.
I figured out some of these strategies on my own over the past several years, but you've made some really terrific suggestions for additional things to keep in mind.
Following journalists, publication and media so ures you trust is WAY easier than CURATING one’s intake of the same.
The overwhelm is crippling my IN box and my focus.
At 62 I am forced now into a place where I am beginning to think the only way to get some sanity (and bandwidth) back is to (get this) study up on how to create an RSS feed!?
I am an archivist by association and a librarian and congenital organizer but I am STUMPED at how to fix a place for myself wherein I can reach for the kind of content I want - from the kind of providers I know - even enough to keep up with enough of daily news to prevent FOMO on the level of existential panic these days.
I know I am not alone in t his - but also realize that the most common way everybody else but us info gluttons and policy wonks deal with it is by TUNING OUT.
It’s a natural survival mechanism that is being fully leveraged by those who would control us and so far - seeing it for what it is hasn't produced insight enough to solve for it.
At least not in this brain pan.
How about it, hive mind?
Anyone out there curating an online news/info feed that WORKS?

Feels like IM taking more and more of them as we go deeper into this enshitifacation…
Much more of this and I’m an ostrich.
Excellent, helpful post.
